A newly discovered asteroid, 2024 YR4, is being closely monitored by scientists due to a potential Earth impact in 2032. Discovered on December 27, 2024, the asteroid is estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters in diameter (roughly the size of a football pitch). A collision with Earth could unleash energy comparable to a nuclear bomb, causing significant damage, particularly in populated areas.

Currently about 27 million miles away and moving away from Earth, 2024 YR4's path is projected to intersect Earth's orbit on December 22, 2032. After this, it will be out of view until 2028. While experts believe there's a nearly 99% chance it will safely pass Earth, they haven't entirely ruled out the possibility of an impact.

The International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) issued a Potential Impact Warning Notification for 2024 YR4 last week. Astronomers estimate the asteroid could come within 66,000 miles of Earth, but NASA notes the inherent unpredictability of asteroid orbits, raising the possibility of a direct hit. Potential impact zones, according to the IAWN, include the eastern Pacific, northern South America, Africa, and South Asia
